While I do enjoy Thai food a lot, I am not a big fan of what the Thais call “a decent breakfast”. So far I have been feeding my morning hunger with cornflakes but after 11 months in Thailand this is becoming a bit boring; and besides, I never had the feeling it gave me a real foundation to build the rest of the day on. So recently I am mostly craving for a breakfast I have had for decades back home in Holland: a couple of decent slices of bread with some tasty sliced meat on them.
The easiest available bread in Thailand is shown in the picture below. They sell several varieties at almost each supermarket, including at most of the millions of 7-11 branches around the country. At first I was quite content with this bread since the taste reminded me of bread in Holland, even though it’s a bit sweeter here, but I soon realized that it stayed fresh a bit too long which could be due to a large amount of fats in there, or even worse: trans fats.
After some searching I found out there are several decent bakeries in Bangkok that have European style bread available, but the downside stays that you have to travel to the bakery, something that can take some time in Bangkok no matter how close by it is, and since this bread contains less fat you also need to buy fresh every other day, or settle for crumbling and tasteless bread.
The simple solution to this problem would be to make my own bread. One small problem though: I have no kitchen in my apartment at 21 living place. Luckily there is a solution for every problem and my solution was on sale at the Power Mall at Siam Paragon.
Ingredients to make bread are available in most large supermarkets, although it might take some effort to find everything and understand what is what since most packages are completely in Thai. So far I just bought a lot of different kinds of flour to find out which one suits my taste best.
These days I am waking up with the smell of fresh bread in my small room and fresh and warm bread available for breakfast. It does take some experience and experimenting to get bread that is perfect for your own taste, but at an average cost of about 25 baht per bread you only need patience to earn back the investment of the bread baking machine.
Now that I solved this problem a new problem arises: where to get some good sliced meat to eat on my freshly baked bread? Currently I need to go to a large supermarket to have some choice available because the stuff sold at smaller supermarkets and the 7-11 is not really what I like. Or maybe I should start looking for a meat slicer and import my own chunks of meat from Europe?
