There are many places to eat in Thailand; almost every street has some restaurants or street vendors selling something that is eatable. And while some restaurants are better than others, most are average and the difference between the good ones and the averages ones is so small that it is not worth the effort to go out of your way to find the one that is above average. That is the main reason why I never took the effort to review a restaurant here. Today I will make an exception though, because the place I have now been to stands out above all the other places I have eaten so far in Thailand, and besides, the location makes it almost a destination by itself if you like taking pictures of yourself and friends as most Thais do.
Located in Khao Yai, about a one hour drive from Nakhon Ratchasima, you can find “Smoke House” by taking a left 6km before reaching Farm Chokchai. From there it is another 4-6 driving till you pass Smoke House which is located at the side of the road. The restaurant, including a small shop, is located in a building that reminds me a bit of a French castle; at least from a distance. From closer by you will notice it is just a brand new, tacky design which pollutes the Thai landscape just as Santorini park and Palio Khao Yai do.
Once you enter through the main entrance you first step into a small shop where they sell mainly Italian products like olives, olive oil, and Italian meats. They also have fresh baked bread and wines, but unfortunately I was not able to taste either so far. After being seated in the restaurant there will be an extensive menu with both Thai and “Western-style” dishes. For people who have trouble deciding what to choose they even have a couple of recommendations so you can still impress your table guests when you walk in there for the first time by studying the menu extensively and picking out the most tasty dishes.
The portions in the restaurant are surely not small, and when placing our order the waiter already warned us that we ordered a lot and we might not be able to finish it; did we prove him wrong! The dish that I would highly recommend is the smoked pork neck with mustard sauce and the smoked pork ribs which taste like a little angel is peeing on your tongue (which is positive).
The total bill, for 2 persons, came to about 1,600 baht which is not bad considering we ordered 4 plates in total. And after the meal it was time to take some pictures of the surrounding where groups of other restaurant guests were already doing their best to make the best pictures with a mobile phone so they could impress their Facebook friends.
