MS Sportclub (fitness) in Nakhon Ratchasima

February 10, 2013

Thailand is, for sure, a very “lazy” country. People do not like to walk, and when they have to walk they always try to find ways to limit their energy spending as much as possible. Look for example at the amount of people who avoid stairs like the plague on subway stations and skytrain stations. Most people who do sports do it for a living, and whenever I trained at a muay thai gym in Thailand local fighters were surprised I did this for fun and I even paid to train there (whats the fun of being kicked around?).

Nowadays things are changing slowly and more and more people do sports for health reasons or fun. The average Thai dislikes sun and heat (than WTF are you doing in Thailand?) so they prefer a nice fitness / health club where you are out of the sun and can enjoy the cool breeze from the AC.

All around the country you see branches of “California Wow” and “Fitness First” popping up. At The Mall in Nakhon Ratchasima there is a Fitness First but the location (it’s a long drive and too many distractions there) and the price (expensive) did not seem right to me. So I settled for “MS Sportclub” which is a lot closer by to where I live and more decently priced.

MS Sportclub is located at Mittraphap Rd. at 14°59'51.35"N / 102° 6'39.40"E

There is a parking lot at the gym which is handy because you can only reach the place by car. I have been training there for 3 weeks now and so far no complaints.

The place is clean and well maintained which is pretty special for Thailand. There is a large open space with the necessary equipment you might need; treadmills, indoor-bikes, strength-training machines, dumbbells, etc. I have been there at different times and during the day there is almost nobody there (hint: the pictures below are made on a working day around 3PM) which is logical since most people work then. It gets a lot busier after 5PM and it peaks on Mondays around 7PM. But even at busier times I have never had any trouble finding a machine that is free.

If you want you can hire a personal trainer but for me it is not necessary that someone tells me what to do. In the evening there are also group lessons available like Zumba, yoga, spinning, etc. These lessons are all included in the price but I have not tried them yet. All classes are in Thai so I wonder how much trouble I would have with a class of yoga when I don’t understand a word they are saying.

When you first come there you will have to pay administration costs of 2000 baht, which makes me assume they make a huge file about you which they store in a file cabinet made of precious metal. After that you pay per month where you get a discount if you pay a couple of months ahead:

1 month: 2000 baht per month

2 months: 1900 baht per month

3 months: 1800 baht per month

4 months: 1700 baht per month

6 months: 1600 baht per month

I guess the price will not continue to go down this quickly for each month added, otherwise you could pay ahead for a couple of years at once and not be charged anything. The website of the fitness can be found here on Facebook.
